There is no doubt that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s contribution to the Munich Security Conference was like a bucket of cold water. He began by claiming that what he wanted was to talk about was shared values but he did nothing of the kind.

Vance treated delegates like recalcitrant schoolchildren and lectured them on free speech. However, he got to the point and declared that in Washington there is a new sheriff in town and talked of burden sharing, that the Europeans should step up while America focuses on areas of the world that are in great danger (read: China and Taiwan). ... The main political event of 2024 undoubtedly was Trump’s victory in the US elections. Similarly to the months before Trump’s first term, his 2024 presidential campaign was full of courageous plans and promises. The most ground-shaking initiative in the field of foreign policy was the peace deal between Ukraine and Russia who have been at violent war for three years now. The politician first mentioned it in his social media post in March 2023 and repeatedly expanded on this issue during his political rallies and in several interviews over the past two years. ... The Kingdom of Denmark, which includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands (the Danish Realm), has the chairmanship for the Arctic Council for the next two years. The Arctic Council has eight members, which include the United States and Russia, and six organisations that represent the Indigenous People of the Arctic.
Already in June 2021 it was decided between Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands that Greenland would represent the Danish Realm in the Arctic Council, and therefore it was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greenland, Vivian Motzfeldt, who took over the chairmanship on the 12th of May 2025. ... A quiet but dangerous ideology is growing within the United States: isolationism. Although it sounds quite patriotic on the surface, painting it as putting Americans first, in practice it will weaken the American position. It isn't about military withdrawal, but the growing perception of retreat and the vulnerabilities that it invites along with it. There is no way for the United States to prosper as an isolationist state and continue to stay stable. .. Read more

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) plays a crucial role when it comes to EU’s health security, and with that also the world's health security.

Already in 2001, the first comprehensive and global strategy to fight AMR from the European Commission was presented, and since then numerous countries and organizations have developed different approaches to combat AMR, but those approaches have been lacking effective, coordinated cooperation, also between the member states of the EU. Although EU established the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in 2005 and the European Antibiotic Awareness Day was introduced 18 November 2008, the fight against AMR between the member states has been characterized by uneven success. ... The Research Institute for European and American Studies (RIEAS) forms a Business Diplomacy Department. Business diplomacy refers to the strategic application of diplomatic principles and practices by businesses, particularly multinational corporations, to navigate complex international environments and build positive relationships with stakeholders. It involves managing relationships with governments, local communities, and other relevant groups to gain legitimacy and mitigate non-commercial risks. In practical terms, essence, business diplomacy equips companies with the skills and mindset to navigate the complexities of the global business landscape, fostering stability, legitimacy, and sustainable growth.

Key aspects of business diplomacy:

  • Relationship Building:

Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with governments and other stakeholders is crucial for securing a "license to operate" and fostering long-term success in foreign markets.

  • Risk Management:

Business diplomacy helps companies identify and mitigate risks associated with political instability, regulatory changes, and other non-market factors.

  • Legitimacy and Reputation:

By engaging in ethical and responsible business practices and building positive relationships, companies can enhance their legitimacy and protect their reputation in the international arena.

  • Strategic Tool:

Business diplomacy is not just about avoiding problems; it can also be a proactive tool for creating opportunities and gaining a competitive advantage.

  • Beyond Traditional Diplomacy:

Business diplomacy adapts the principles of state diplomacy to the unique needs and context of the business world, recognizing that companies are increasingly important actors in the international arena.

  • Stakeholder Focus:

It shifts the focus from solely shareholders to a broader range of stakeholders, including governments, local communities, and non-governmental organizations.

The Research Institute for European and American Studies (RIEAS) has established a collaborative partnership with INTUS Smart Cities (www.intussmartcities.com) which realizes a great potential in RIEAS as an established Global network of Academic and Geopolitical influencers that can provide great networks to numerous countries and geographic areas, valuable Geopolitical and Geoeconomic Risk Management analysis and fantastic reputation and credibility.
