Dr Aref Ali Nayed gave a comprehensive talk on the current obstacles to a resolution of the Libyan crisis, dissecting the root causes of the conflict that has now lasted 8 years. He provided an assessment of the effectiveness of the Berlin Conference, the continue aggression by Turkey and its use of radical Syrian jihadists to support the illegal Tripoli regime. He also explored how Libya-Greece relations would be vital for regional progress and stability.

Aya Burweila provided a detailed overview to the participants of the nature of Islamists and jihadi radicals who have infiltrated Libya since 2011, and the most current influx of Syrian Islamist radical fighters from Syria by Erdogan. Burweila provided extensive data on the Turkish involvement in the Libya conflict, and how Erdogan’s support for the Muslim Brotherhood and its jihadi offshoots was effectively creating a terror pipeline in the MENA region with serious implications for European security.

Nayed and Burweila called for the de-recognition of the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) by the international community.

The roundtable was attended by governmental, diplomatic, military, and intelligence officials and was followed by a robust discussion on key issues of the Greece-Libya political, security, economic relationship. The discussion also focused on the threat to political stability in the Mediterranean following the maritime jurisdiction agreement signed between Tripoli and Ankara.

The Roundtable was followed the official signing of an MOU between RIEAS and LIAS for joint research, training and advisory cooperation between the two research institutes.

A press conference with representatives of Greek media for radio, television, and print and online news was held at the end of the event.
